In this world of immediate online access, it’s hard to imagine how the fashion press operated a century ago. If you can believe it, trends and silhouettes were sketched – by hand! – and brought back on trans Atlantic steamers. At the time, Womens Wear Daily was the foremost voice on the industry, and in many respects that is still the case today. Last night at Cipriani’s on 42nd Street, the paper reminded the world of their history, their relevance, and their power (they got every major designer to participate in a specialty auction), bringing the likes of Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg, Stefano Pilati and so many others out to pay homage.
