Backstage Beauty: The 5 Best Makeup Looks From Milan Fall 2010

leave a comment »

Bold lips, defined eyes, shimmer in just the right places: These are the makeup looks we will be stealing from Milan fashion week.

1. Gianfranco Ferré:
We’re suckers for bright, glossy lips—so of course we’re smitten with the "really strong, wet lips" that makeup artist Peter Philips created at Ferré. He applied two coats of a blue-based red (Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick in Gabrielle)—after lining and filling in the mouth with a matching red lip pencil—and topped them with a high-shine red gloss. Then he balanced the vivid mouth with soft taupe shadow and a bit of shimmery peach blush.

2. Roberto Cavalli: The eyes really did have it at this show. Makeup artist Pat McGrath create chocolate-burgundy smoky eyes by using Cover Girl’s Liquiline in Brown (out soon) as a base on the lids, topped with Cover Girl Smoky Shadowblast in Purple Plum and then burgundy shimmer. She coated both the top and bottom lashes in mascara, and kept the rest of the face pretty bare. "The look of Cavalli this season is luxurious, sexy, hippy," she said. "Very exotic."

3. Gucci: Here, McGrath also focused on the eyes—but in a more defined way. "It’s not about smoke or smolder," she said. "It’s about the intensity." She finely lined the inner rims of the eyes with a black kohl pencil, then applied a brown shadow on top of the black liner, also very close to the lash line. She added Cover Girl LashBlast Fusion Mascara (coming soon! I’m testing it right now!) to the top and bottom lashes, and finished the look with highlighter on the cheeks and balm on the mouth.

4. Aquilano.Rimondi: Created by makeup artist Michiko Ikeda (a protégé of Chanel makeup guru and backstage regular Peter Philips), the soft olive and gray shadows paired with healthy pink cheeks will translate beautifully off the runway—and that’s really saying something. Ikeda dusted M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Sumptuous Olive over the lids, then applied a light gray in the creases. Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation perfected the skin, followed by Chanel Powder Blush in Fresque (a tawny peach) on the cheeks and transparent gloss on the lips.

5. Dolce & Gabbana:
Defined eyes, strong lips—classic (but modernized) Dolce & Gabbana. Of this look, above, McGrath said, "It’s the way real women wear makeup, not so perfectly applied as we normally do here. But still gorgeous and radiant." She traced black eyeliner along the top lashes and winged it out a bit, applied taupe powder all around the eyes, then patted a little highlighter on the lids. For the raspberry-red lips, she mixed three Dolce & Gabbana lipsticks—Dahlia (deep merlot), Ultra (rich, dark red), and Devil (classic blue-red)—then finger-tapped the darkest one (Ultra) in the middle of the lips for depth.
